Sponsored by the Cuban & Caribbean Studies Institute at Tulane University and the University of Havana, students receive six credits in either Spanish, Latin American Studies, or History. This summer I was one of five Tulane students who participated in the House of the Frescoes Project at Knossos, Crete. The project, run by Professor Emilia Oddo, Classical Studies, examined ceramic assemblages from the House of the Frescoes. read more

Alumni Spotlight - Ruth Falcon Striking a Chord Operatic soprano Ruth Falcon, who received her MFA at Tulane in 1971, became one of the most celebrated operatic sopranos throughout Europe and America as well as an elite voice teacher. A New Orleans native, she received her undergraduate degree from Loyola and left for New York for additional training. Returning to New Orleans to appear with the New Orleans Opera Association, she stayed to receive her advanced degree and to profit from all the city had to offer. read more

New Orleans Center for the Gulf South K-12 Summer Workshop The interplay of socio-political change and creative expression was the focus of New Orleans: Music, Culture and Civil Rights, two week-long workshops hosted this past summer by Music Rising at Tulane, a program of the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South. The Center received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops for School Teachers program to offer the workshops and stipends for all participants. read more

Even in the hottest of days, however, the faculty and students of SLA were engaged in amazing projects. They spanned the globe through special summer programs, internships, and fellowships.

Jana Lipman
Japanese Scholars of U.S. History

This summer I was honored to be selected by the Organization of American Historians (OAH) and the Japanese Association of American Studies (JAAS) to be a faculty resident at Osaka University. The program selects two U.S.-based academics each year to lecture in Japan and promote dialogue between American and Japanese scholars of U.S. history. I spent just over a month in Japan, traveling from the center of Tokyo to Tosashimizu, a small fishing village in southern Shikoku.

Summer Lyric Theatre's 50th Anniversary Gala

The 50th Anniversary Gala of Tulane's Summer Lyric Theatre was held Saturday, June 3. It kicked-off with a patron party in the Lavin-Bernick Center.  The main event of the evening, a concert starring some of Summer Lyric's most beloved alumni, followed in Dixon Hall.
