Experience New Orleans
New Orleans is a city with a unique blend of cultures, history, and vibrant energy. While you're here for the Clifford Lectures and Conference, take some time to explore the city and discover its many charms.
New Orleans Geography
New Orleans is situated between Lake Pontchartrain to the north and the Mississippi River to the south. The city is divided into several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm. The areas generally considered "Downtown" include the French Quarter, Central Business District (CBD), Warehouse District, and Marigny. "Uptown" encompasses neighborhoods like the Garden District, Irish Channel, and Audubon. Tulane University is located in Uptown New Orleans.
Getting Around
New Orleans offers a variety of transportation options to help you navigate the city and reach the conference venue:
- Streetcar: The St. Charles Avenue streetcar line is a charming and convenient way to travel to Tulane University and explore the Garden District and Uptown areas. It's also the oldest continuously operating streetcar in the world! However, keep in mind that the streetcar may not always run on schedule, so allow extra time for your journey.
- Public Transportation: The streetcar and the RTA bus system cost $1.25 for a single ride (ticket valid for two hours), or $3 for an all-day Jazzy Pass. If you're using cash, have exact change ready. You can also purchase tickets via RTA's app, Le Pass.
- Ride-Sharing: Uber and Lyft are readily available and a convenient option for getting around, especially at night.
- Walking: Many areas of New Orleans are walkable, but be mindful of your surroundings and avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
Important Note: While exploring the city, remember that neighborhoods can change quickly in terms of safety. Be aware of your surroundings, and if you're unsure about a route, consult a local or use a ride-sharing service.
